If you are a business owner in Georgia, you have the weighty responsibility of protecting your patrons and securing your businesses' assets. ANSI Door Lock Grades Explained

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) grading system was developed years ago to standardize a testing procedure to measure the durability and strength of a door lock. This grading system applies to both residential and commercial door locks. Composed of three different grades, the ANSI grading system gives homeowners and business owners a good idea of lock quality and reliability. ANSI examines six different qualities to determine a lock's grade:

  • Strength Cycles - How many uses a lock can withstand before a replacement lock is needed)
  • Operational - This refers to a door's ability to latch when it is closed
  • Security - The effectiveness of the lock's security
  • Material - What kind of material is the lock made of?
  • Finish - Satin, nickel-plated, bronze, etc.

Grade 1 Locks

These locks offer the highest level of security and are most often used by institutions like hospitals, schools, and even museums. These locks also have the highest life expectancy, though they can be much more complex and require an expert residential or commercial locksmith in cityname to install. In today's day and age, many more homeowners are opting for Grade 1 locks (like electronic locks) for the most peace of mind. This classification of lock must hold up against 800,000 cycles, six door strikes and a 360-pound weight test.

Grade 2 Locks

These locks are great for residential areas with more foot traffic, like a door that leads to an apartment complex or suite of rooms. These locks can also suffice for small businesses that need a higher level of security than Grade 3 locks. Use these locks when you want to secure access to areas with valuable equipment or sensitive documents. This classification of lock requires 400,000 cycles, four door strikes, and a 250-pound weight test.

Grade 3 Locks

This grade of lock is best suited for residential purposes and is considered standard door hardware. This kind of lock is the least expensive and should never be used in a high-traffic area like a lobby or storefront. However, these locks would be suitable for areas without much foot traffic like storage closets or areas without expensive merchandise. Because these locks are easiest to bypass, consider upgrading your Grade 3 locks with anti-bump and anti-pick technology. This classification of lock requires 200,000 lock cycles, two door strikes, and a 150-pound weight test.

After two days of severe weather, a severe weather outbreak looks to target most of the Eastern U.S. today. The greatest area of concern will occur in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys. A potent low pressure system will move from the Mississippi Valley into the Great Lakes today. South and east of this system, plenty of very warm, moist air will interact with a cold front and will lead to widespread thunderstorm activity. Several Tornado Watches are in effect currently, which stretches across southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois and far southwestern Indiana into western Kentucky and central Tennessee. Cities included in these watches are Cape Girardeau, Mo., Carbondale, Ill., Evansville, Ind., Paducah, Ky., and Clarksville and Nashville, Tenn. The government's Storm Prediction Center has placed a Moderate Risk (rated 4 out of 5 on the severe weather scale) for severe weather across southeastern Indiana, southern Ohio and central and eastern Kentucky. Cities within this risk include Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton, Ohio, and Louisville and Lexington-Fayette, Ky. Here, very large hail to the size of golf balls or larger, destructive winds of 60 to 70 mph or more, and several tornadoes will be likely. Outside of this area, an Enhanced Risk extends from northeastern Mississippi, most of Alabama and western Georgia northward into the Ohio Valley. This includes Birmingham, Ala., Atlanta, Jackson and Nashville, Tenn., Indianapolis, Akron, Ohio, and Charleston, W. Va. A larger Slight Risk envelops this area and stretches from the central Gulf Coast through western Virginia and southwestern Pennsylvania. Cities included in this area include Mobile, Ala., Tallahassee, Fla., Columbia, S.C., Charlotte, N.C., Roanoke, Va., Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Areas in both the Enhanced and Slight Risks will be at risk for wind gusts up to 60 mph or more, large hail and possibly a few tornadoes. In addition to the storms, rounds of heavy rainfall across the Ohio Valley into the central Appalachian Mountains and Mid-Atlantic may cause some flooding. Flood Watches are in effect across central Illinois, southern Indiana, northern Kentucky, central and southern Ohio, much of West Virginia, southwestern Pennsylvania, most of Maryland and northern Virginia. This includes cities such as Bloomington, Ill., Indianapolis, Lexington, Ky., Cincinnati and Columbus, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Charleston, W.V., Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. One to as much as 3 inches of rainfall will be possible. The best thing to do is to stay prepared and weather-aware, starting with knowing the difference between a watch and a warning should they be issued this week. A watch means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop, and you need to have a plan in place for acting. However, a warning means that severe weather has been indicated and/or imminent, and you need to act fast to remain safe. When in doubt remember, “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!”Read More

PANAMA CITY — In the past six months, a Georgia-based developer quietly has purchased four major properties in Panama City.

The purchases of the Cabana Motel, the Grocery Outlet building at 301 E. Sixth St., Daffin Supply Company building at 401 W. Sixth St., and a parcel of waterfront property near Panama City City Hall all trace back to George Kingston, a largely elusive figure who has been purchasing property in the Panhandle for years.

The sum of the combined purchases is a little more than $4.7 million, according to public records.

Kingston could not be reached for comment for this story, and real estate agent Dwight Hicks, who often represents Kingston, had “no comment” for this story.

While tight-lipped about the plans, Kingston purchasing the Beach Drive property means he now owns all the waterfront property from Government Street to West Fifth Street, according to the property appraiser’s website, save one parcel owned by the city.

Owning that much property near the proposed Panama City Downtown Marina redevelopment could have implications for the project. So far, however, Kingston is not in talks with the city.

Panama City Mayor Greg Brudnicki said while he doubts Kingston would propose something for the spot that wouldn’t benefit the marina project, he could “only speculate” on what Kingston might be doing.

Similarly, Commissioner Mike Nichols has said Kingston buying the prominent Cabana Motel property is a “great thing” for St. Andrews, but he declined to comment on what Kingston’s plans might be.

Kingston, while based in Georgia, is not a new property owner in Panama City. His properties speckle the greater downtown area, including a few spots on Harrison Avenue, the lots off Sixth Street between Mulberry and Florida avenues and a cluster of parcels off Fifth Street near Massalina Bayou. He has been buying these properties since at least 2005.

The land and buildings have been purchased under various limited liability companies, including Reese Investment Inc., Beach Drive PC Properties and 1212 Beck Avenue. While the companies have different names and registered agents, all of them have 6622 E Broad St., Suite A, Douglasville, Georgia — Kingston’s offices — listed as the primary mailing address and his signature appears often on the documents.

Panama City is not the only place Kingston has been buying up land. He also owns a number of parcels in Walton and Okaloosa counties.

Rep. Jack Kingston Proposes That Poor Students Sweep Floors In Exchange For Lunch

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) wants kids to learn early in life that there's no such thing as a free lunch. To make sure they absorb that lesson, he's proposing that low-income children do some manual labor in exchange for their subsidized meals.

Under that program, children from families with incomes at or below 130 percent of the poverty line are eligible for free meals. Students from families with incomes between 130 percent and 185 percent of the poverty level can receive lunches at reduced prices.

But on Saturday, Kingston came out against free lunches, saying that children should have to pay at least a nominal amount or do some work like sweeping cafeteria floors.

"But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch? Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria -- and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money. But think what we would gain as a society in getting people -- getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch," he said.

Besides the "administrative problem," Kingston's plan could create significant embarrassment for low-income children, who would be sweeping cafeteria floors while their wealthier peers did normal kid activities. And while the low-income children would supposedly be learning the lesson of hard work, their wealthier peers would simply be getting a free lunch from their parents.

Asked for additional comment on the congressman's remarks, Kingston spokesman Chris Crawford replied, "It is sad that trying to have a productive conversation about instilling a strong work ethic in the next generation of Americans so quickly devolves into the usual name-calling partisan hysteria. Having worked from a young age himself, Congressman Kingston understands the value of hard work and the important role it plays in shaping young people."

"You say to somebody, you shouldn't go to work before you're what, 14, 16 years of age, fine. You're totally poor. You're in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing. I've tried for years to have a very simple model," Gingrich said. "Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they'd begin the process of rising."

Kingston is running against seven other Republicans in the 2014 primary to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.). The winner is expected to face Michelle Nunn, the leading contender on the Democratic side, in the general election.

This story has been updated with comment from Rep. Kingston's spokesman.

CORRECTION: This story earlier stated incorrectly that Kingston is a member of the House Agriculture Committee.
